Before the online sessions, we provide you with some fun, educational activities to complete with your dog, these will help you to prepare for the hands-on sessions.
Part A – Identifying sub-clinical signs of muscular pain
in your dog
Let’s get thinking about the subtle ways that dogs can indicate muscular
injury and pain. This unit helps to get you thinking about how your dog shows
subtle signs of pain that may often be helped with canine massage therapy. It
can also help you to consider things in your home that may be causing or
contributing to your dog’s muscular pain. The good news is that small
environmental changes can often make a big difference to your dog’s mobility
and quality of life. We will be having a group discussion based around this
module, so please be sure to fill in the activity sheet and bring it with you
to the online session.
Part B – Anatomy Basics – Bony Landmarks & Joints
Can you identify some your dog’s main joints and bony landmarks? Have fun
working through the activity first on paper and then with your dog!
Part C – Anatomy Basics – Muscles
Can you locate on a diagram some of your dog’s main muscle groups? This one requires a bit of online research but we have no doubt you will find it fascinating to take a stroll underneath your dog’s skin. During massage, you will be working on these muscles so getting to know roughly where they are can help you to provide a safe, thoughtful and compassionate massage for your dog.

This is where all your previous knowledge from the first two Modules will really come to fruition as your instructor guides you and your dog through the massage techniques to ensure that by the end of the workshop you are confident and competent, providing you with a skill for life that will benefit your dog each and every time
Here are a few hints and tips to help you and your dog get the most out of the session:
Take time to allow your dog to get into a relaxed position. Ensure you provide bedding and give them room. Do not crowd them.
Not all dogs will want to lie on their side so do not force them as it can end up putting them off
Your dog may not like all techniques and that is ok. This may be indicative of irritate tissue so if or when this occurs your instructor will assist you and help you understand why.
Please be aware that our instructors do not diagnose. Only a vet can do this. If your workshop instructor believes that your dog would benefit from a visit to the vet, they will help you to understand why but cannot and will not second guess conditions, pathologies, and underlying causes. We respect vets and we know that that is not our area. We ask that you understand and respect this. Thank you.
Put on some more active music for the Pre event routine and a relaxing music for the cool down routine
Develop a routine that informs your dog that you are going to start a massage session
Every day is different for the body. What was comfortable last week may not be today. Respect that
If your dog displays classic signs of muscular pain or myofascial pain, your instructor will provide you with the details of a Canine Massage Guild Therapist
Take time to listen to what your dog is telling you. If they are telling you it hurts, do not keep doing it. Enjoy, relax and we hope you enjoy getting to know your dog on a very different level
When preparing yourself for the first of your Interactive Online Sessions, please position your video camera to ensure that I can see both you and your dog during the session. It can be useful to have a practice to set up your video well before the start of the session as you will not have time to do this once the session starts.
You should by now have worked through the exercises presented in Module 1 and started to become familiar with the 5 Principals of Pain and your dog’s Anatomy. It’s now time for you to attend the first of your two online sessions.
Please remember to have the documents you downloaded and printed out from Module 1 to hand including the diagrams of the dog’s skeleton and muscles that you have annotated with the relevant names.
I look forward to meeting you in person in the Online session!
